It was a Wednesday and we thought we should beat the Memorial Day weekend crowd and make a trip to the mountains for some river surfing and fishing. Turns out it was a good idea because local businesses in Cascade were celebrating Customer Appreciation Day. We couldn't say no to free pizza and ice-cream and bagged the foil dinner idea. After making our rounds we headed back to the family cabin to unwind and reminisce.
I gave my little Van man a cabin tour and told him stories of why each room was special. The thing about our family cabin is, nothing changes. Maybe a few pieces of furniture here and there, but rarely. Everything remains in its original vintage condition, showing signs of wear and tear. The worn out couches and creaky chairs remind us of the many memories made in our cabin. There are even coloring books with pictures colored by the 8 year old version of me and torn pages from my favorite bedtime stories. Feathers I collected from the lake shore and old plastic cups I used as bath toys. Everything is left as I remember.
Now I can take my baby to the cabin and share a place with him that has been in our family for generations. We get to create new memories and we might even leave a few marks (sorry Grandpa) that each tell a story. The family cabin feels like home.
