So today Drew and I were driving home from visiting his family in Grantsville, and it was late in the evening, stormy, and hot. Obviously, I was sleepy. I always fall asleep in cars. But for some reason as Drew was flipping through the radio stations Shania Twain's song, "Any Man of Mine" caught my attention. So Drew stopped browsing and let me sing along.
Somehow, I remembered every word. When me and my sisters were younger, we loved country music. Shania Twain, Dixie Chicks, She Daisy, and Tim McGraw were among our favorites. When we would put in their CD we would sing and dance around the house looking and sounding ridiculous but I remember having so much fun doing that. It brought back some fond memories with my sissies, and also made me really miss them. But mostly, it made me laugh.

Here's the confession... I knew every country song that came on the radio from Grantsville to Midvale.
And that's about a 45 minute or so drive. Drew was laughing so hard, because anyone that knows me knows I claim to hate country. Maybe I don't? Because I knew songs I didn't even think I recognised, but once I heard the chorus the words came back to me. It was so weird but so fun, I'm telling ya I felt so happy! It was hilarious. Some things about childhood never leave I guess. Apparently I remember lyrics to country songs better than I do now with my favorite rock bands.
Good thing is, after Drew had to suffer listening to me "singing" along with the radio the whole way home, I was able to keep him company instead of the usual passing out, and he admitted to falling in love with me all over again. And that made me even more happy.
oh my heck i totally am SO IN LOVE WITH THIS POST! i laughed and smiled the whole way thru, and that part at the end made me sigh! SO SWEET! i love you and drew!
ReplyDeleteomg meg totally agree--maybe we do love country secretly at heart. because to this day, i still memorize all the songs we used to listen to! i mean think about it, we listened to it ALL THE TIME cleaning our room, making new beanie baby lands, and we'd even sneak in mom's room to watch CMT and dance like shania! haha wow so many good times.
i love you megan. thanks for posting this--we really did have some good happy days with country. i still got those lyrics in my head and it makes me wonder why i can listen to a band of horses a million times and still not have any idea what they're saying.
