DIY Curtains for Burt
it seems every vw bus we get needs curtains. [see past busses we've owned here] i can't wait to get a bus someday that comes with the original set of curtains, but until then i get to do it myself. at least it's fun to be able to pick the fabric! it's always tricky with old busses that are missing parts and original hardware so i have to come up with a plan.
before our vanventure i knew i needed to make privacy curtains for the vanagon. i don't like the idea of sleeping in the woods with open windows, especially with my precious baby [ain't nobody messin' with him] so with some help from my mom, we whipped up some gray panel curtains just in time for our road trip.
burt is a wolfsburg edition, which is supposed to come with curtains. i don't know why they are missing, but there were no rods inside for me to even attach curtains. until i discovered the ceiling was metal with only a thin layer of vinyl covering it. so, i busted out some magnets and started sewing.
we sewed six curtains total, each labeled for the appropriate window. one for the rear hatch, sliding door, two back windows, side window, and one ridiculously large curtain for across the front. we set that one up only at night and labeled it our "privacy curtain." we sewed small pockets into each curtain to hold industrial strength magnets that are almost too powerful. the curtains stay up great, even with the windows down and wind blowing them about. i was pretty impressed with how they held up after our vanventure! [you're welcome future van owner]
