Hello!
I've been busy with school and final projects, but only two more weeks and I'm done forever! I can hardly believe it. I will be posting about our fourth of July weekend and things eventually, I've just been working on a photo project which has been taking most of my time. Perhaps you will see that soon on here too!
I have been thinking a lot lately about getting dread locks after I graduate for several reasons:
I've always wanted to try it.
I like having beads and cool stuff in my hair.
I have naturally curly crazy black girl hair and with a permanent hairstyle I think life would be easier.
I would definitely want small dreads, not big nasty ones.
My hair is damaged anyway.
We're going to Central America soon and plan on moving to Honduras after Drew graduates to volunteer for a non-profit organization down there, and I figured what better time to do it then when I'm traveling and don't have time to get pretty anyway? Plus no more BYUI restrictions.
What the heck will I do when I don't want them anymore? Undoing them would be impossible with my hair and take FOREVER so I would have to CUT them off, and I don't think I can pull off a pixie. That scares me because I'm obsessed with long hair and dreads would make my hair even shorter.
Dreads are actually quite the long process and need constant work and TLC if you know what I mean.
Fear of looking nasty or dirty all the time. I want clean ones and I've been reading about it online and I hear it is possible to have lovely locks.
I fear people assuming I'm a "rasta" or wannabe "hippie" or something. I love the hippie look and lifestyle I guess you could say, but I do not smoke pot nor will I ever (in another life maybe).
What would I do if I wanted to look pretty, like for church or a wedding?
What my family will think. More so my parents and brothers, oh and especially my grandparents, haha. I already know actually. I know my sisters and hub think it'd be cool, but my brothers would probably make fun of me forever. I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure I'm right.
It's a permanent and bold hairstyle, so I'd be stuck with it for a while so I'd better like it!
So those are my thoughts. What do you think? You can be honest, it's not like I'm doing this for other people I've just always wanted to try it because whenever I see dreads I just get happy. C'mon, I had an afro when I was a freshmen in high school.

meggie dear, i say go for it. but i totally agree with all your worries/concerns... i'd feel the same way. we'll see how this goes and what people say but in the end it's your head your hair your decision. i think this is the prime time to try something crazy b/c you'll be out of country! PERFECT! the beauty of backpacking... ahhh! do it. you can def pull off a fro again because you can straighten it. it probably wouldnt even take long!
ReplyDeleteHmmm...I'll have to think about this. When you were listing the reasons NOT to do it, I agreed with them and thought that was the right answer. Then I read the reasons TO do it and thought those were good too. Either way you're beautiful and as long as you're happy. Can't wait to hear the verdict. :)

ReplyDeleteI say DO IT! When I was Costa Rica I did something kind of like dreads but less risky...you could go buy the fake hair and braid it in in really tiny braids, and they turn out looking kind of like dreds but dont shred your hair and you can take them out whenever you want. It's an option. But i LOVED it!
PS- It took three girls braiding it and 7 hours, I used 3 different colors so it was pretty cool. But the time is also something to think about :)
About the photos...thank you! Yes I use two different lenses, I want more but for now only two. Hope all is well! Miss you guys
DO IT!!! and when you cut them all off you will look totally HOTT with a little pixie!!!!
ReplyDeleteps. i miss you.
Okay so I don't really know you ( acutally I think we may have met once upon a time at BYU-I) but I came across your blog cause we have lots of mutual friends. Anyways your blog is SUPER cute and about the dreds I also have always wanted to do it and looked into it, if you live in Idaho I know the perfect girl! She used to have them and they were the skinny ones and looked so good she also did not have to cut her hair after she was able to take them out. Not to tempt you at all but if you do it she owns the defining line salon in downtown Idaho falls. I can't remember her name but she is always there and she is super nice so you could call and talk to her there. Good luck with it all!
